Dog Eared

Dog Eared is a chance to share some of my most worn "dog eared" books that I love to read over and over.... and over again.  This weeks book is Sabriel by Garth Nix!  I absolutely adore this trilogy!  It's dark, gritty, filled with magic and peril, and altogether just amazing!  I pretty much ruined the binding on this book.  The poor poor paperback just never stood a chance.

Synopsis: For many years Sabriel has lived outside the walls of the Old Kingdom, away from the random power of Free Magic, and away from the Dead who won't stay dead. But now her father, the Charter-Mage Abhorsen, is missing, and to find him Sabriel must cross back into that world.

Though her journey begins alone, she soon finds companions: Mogget, whose seemingly harmless feline form hides a powerful --- and perhaps malevolent --- spirit, and Touchstone, a Charter-Mage long imprisoned by magic, now free in body but still trapped by painful memories.
With threats on all sides and only each other to trust, the three of them must travel deep into the Old Kingdom, toward a battle that will pit them against the true forces of life and death --- and bring Sabriel face-to-face with her own hidden destiny.

I just can't express in words how much I truly love this trilogy.  The characters are relatable and funny and utterly loveable.  The world of necromancy is intruiging and mysterious.  This is the only "necromancer" book I've read and I really can't find anything to compare it to.  The amazing world of the Old Kingdom is dangerous and filled with magic!  Which of course just adds to the awesomeness.  Sabriel is smart, determined, and relatable.  She's a young woman determined to rescue her father and take up a mantle that has great expectations that are beyond her years.  Touchstone, suddenly free after hundreds of years of imprisonment, has to face a new world where everything he has once known has changed.  He is loyal to Sabriel and will do anything to protect her.  He's wicked with a pair of swords but all too sweet when it comes to Sabriel.  Yes there's a bit of romance thrown in!  The monsters are terrifying and believe me I never want to come across any risen Dead.  A highly original trilogy that you will fall in love with immediately!

And did you know that there is going to be two more books in the series? *squeals like the fangirl that I am*

They are:

Clariel: The Lost Abhorsen (about Chlorr of the Mask) which is supposed to come out sometime this year... but that seems doubtful.

A "sequel of sorts" to Abhorsen. supposed to come out sometime in 2011
